Makai Research Pier

#1

Just north of Makapu’u, on the windward side of Oahu, is the Makai Research Pier.

#2

It’s a long pier that you can’t miss while driving up the coast. At the end of it, sits the office of Makai Ocean Engineering.

#3

You can’t access the pier unless you work for the engineering company, but that’s fine. I came out here to take photos from below. UPDATE: I’ve been informed that the pier is open to the public on weekdays. This is great … I’m gonna have to check it out next time.

The posts form what looks like a tunnel.

#5

Look up to see some cool textures.

#6

Erosion eats away at the bottom sections.

There is a dirt lot where you can park by the pier but don’t linger too long. I believe break-ins occur regularly around here. Or, if you plan to linger, don’t leave anything of value in your car.

the Makai Research Pier is open to the public (not the buildings; the pier itself) on weekdays. See the sign on the gate for specific hours. People fish off the pier all the time (green-painted areas).

What kinds of settings did you find worked best for long exposures?

What’s up Rita! I learned a bit about this stuff from this Guide to Daytime Long Exposure write up. I picked up the B+W #110 ND filter to throw over my lens. Most of these were shot at F14 or F16, ISO 200 and I left the shutter open for 40 seconds or so. Next time I think I’ll go to F22 and see if I can leave the shutter open 10-15 seconds longer.

You did a really great job! it’s hard to get decent colors in daytime exposures, and yours look pretty good. I’ll be interested to see what else you come up with next time around!
