Looking like an electric fireball.
I’ve been collecting some close up photos for a few months now. The camera sees more than I do so it’s a treat to see the photos at full size. All shots are from hiking trails on Oahu.
On a whim, after a Koko Head hike and lunch, I thought it would be a good idea to check out Portlock Point. I’d never been there before and didn’t know anything about it. I just heard there was this place around Hawaii Kai and that it was “nice.” I think that was understatement. This place is gorgeous. The perfect place to relax, take a nap and watch the sunset.
Whenever I get to the end of a hike I always see these little off-shoot trails and wonder where they go. Problem is, I’m usually too tired to explore or running out of daylight. Well last weekend, at the end of Mariner’s Ridge, we hooked a left, found a trail and kept on hiking. It was most awesome.
Hard to describe in words. Photos better.
That point you see there is it — the third and most challenging peak of the Olomana Trail. I’ve hiked up Olomana a few times already but I was never able to get to the third peak. Last weekend, Dan, Jack and I set out to get to it. It was more challenging and time consuming than I expected. Total hiking time, round trip, was about five hours. It was incredibly fun. I’ll show you the path the top in the photos to follow.
Update 4/25/2011: This is a very popular hike and a lot of people do it but it’s still very dangerous. There have been several news reports recently about hikers falling on this trail and being critically injured. Yesterday, someone fell 150 feet and died. If you have any doubt in your hiking/climbing ability, you may want to consider a different trail.
Every now and then I’ll get out of bed early enough to catch this view.
