Geminids Meteor Shower

Dan sets up his camera.

The Geminids were in effect this week in Hawaii and North America. Monday night, the 15th, was the peak of the meteor shower and a few of us went to go check it out and try to snap some pics. We read that there were supposed to be 50 or so meteors per hour and that was about right. Every minute you’d see a meteor (which looks like a shooting star) or two. It was very cool to see but almost impossible to capture on camera.

Sam, Dan, Reanne and I cruised out to “Alan Davis,” the beach between Sandy Beach and Makapu’u around midnight. It’s one of the darkest spots you can find that’s within 20 minutes of Honolulu.

Sunset over Magic Island

The setting sun over Magic Island.

The shoreline of Ala Moana, where I live, faces Southwest. When the sun sets in the summer, it sets behind the mountain range on the West Coast. But right now, it’s setting straight out over the horizon. The views have been awesome every evening.

UH Tailgate

Football games bring people together like no other sporting event. We don’t have an NFL team in Hawaii, but we’ve got a really good c0llege team. When it’s football season, the entire state rallies behind the University of Hawai’i Warriors. This weekend the Warriors played their final game of the season. Some friends put together a tailgate and I was able to check out my first ever UH game.

The stadium gates opened at 12:30pm and kickoff was at 5:30. We had plenty of time to do some serious tailgating on this warm December afternoon.

Island Trails by Kaleo Lancaster

If you’re into hiking I’m sure you already know about Island Trails. It’s Kaleo Lancaster’s hiking journal and it’s the best hiking blog on the island. I’ve been meaning to write a post about the site for some time now and once I saw this 2010 video summary, I had to share it.

I don’t know Kaleo personally but I met him once on the Olomana Trail. We crossed paths and talked story for a bit. I didn’t recognize him until he warned us about some bees at the top of the third peak. He told us how he and a buddy got swarmed once and took a hard fall. (It was this crazy story.) It was cool to meet him as, I have to admit, I’m a fan.

Most of the hikes I’ve done have been selected using Island Trails as a resource. I’ll send the videos to my friends to get them stoked and then print out the stories to use as a guide during the hike. But there are a lot of trails he’s covered that I won’t touch. Watch the video above and you’ll see why.
